WESTERN HISTORY & EPHEMERA

From the Pacific to the Prairies:

Located in Calgary, Alberta, Hall’s Auction Services has a particular focus on artifacts and historical objects that highlight the rich history of Western Canada.

The Indigenous peoples of Western Canada have lived on this land for thousands of years, leaving behind a legacy of culture and stories that continue to be celebrated and amplified. Hall’s works with consignors, estates, and institutions to offer Indigenous artifacts, artworks, and sculptures created by skilled artisans, and also collaborates with major institutions across the country to ensure due diligence for objects of cultural significance and importance.

The European settlement of the West began in the late 18th century with the fur trade, and rapid expansion followed as technology advanced. British Columbia was established as a colony in 1858, and in 1885, the completion of the Canadian Pacific Railway connected the more established Eastern Canada with the West. In 1905, Alberta and Saskatchewan officially became provinces, and the Canadian government launched extensive advertising campaigns to attract settlers from around the world to the Canadian prairies.

The history of Western Canada is a complex story of Indigenous cultures, European exploration, settlement, and the ongoing development of a diverse and dynamic region. From the fur trade to the rise of oil and gas industries, from the creation of new provinces to the rich multiculturalism that defines the region today, Western Canada continues to evolve, with multitudes of artifacts that denote and remind us of our rich background.
