Live Auctions

Live auctions are held at our showroom with an auctioneer and bidders in attendance.  After you have looked through our catalogue, whether in person or on-line, examined and asked questions about the items you are ready to bid.  There are many way in which to bid at Hall's:

  • IN PERSON
  • WRITTEN ABSENTEE BID
  • TELEPHONE BID
  • ELECTRONIC WEBCAST BID
  • REAL-TIME WEBCAST BID


On the day of the sale, follow the procedure for bidder registration. If you are a new client you will be asked for photo id and a major credit card. Once you have filled our the bidder registration form with your name and address you will receive a bidding number.  

When the lot that you wish to bid on comes up for auction, simply raise your bidding number so the auctioneer may acknowledge your bid.  Contrary to what you might have seen in the movies or on TV, scratching your nose or coughing is not acknowledged as a bid, so you need not worry!


Don't worry if you are too busy to attend an auction.  Hall's can bid on your behalf.  With absentee bids, simply decide on your maximum bid for a particular lot and complete the Absentee Bid Form, listing your maximum bids, and fax the form to us.  Alternately, complete a form at the preview and submit it in person.  Please read the guide first.  We will attempt to purchase the lots for you at the lowest possible price, and never for more than the maximum amount you indicate.


If you wish to feel as though you are actually in the auction room when you bid, even if you are miles away, try telephone bidding.  To arrange a phone bid, please complete the Absentee Bid Form, indicating "PHONE" in the "Top Price" column and submit it to us.  A staff member will call you during the auction, relaying information and your bids during the sale.  You should provide a backup phone number and/or a backup Absentee Bid in case we are unable to reach you. There is no additional charge for this service but we do reserve the right to limit the number of telephone bids on any given item. 


The Web Catalogue now allows you to register for the Webcast and place electronic Webcast Bids prior to the auction.  A Webcast Bid is similar to an Absentee Bid, but is administered by the software.  Simply click into the lot detail page, fill in your maximum bid, and click on the “Place Bid” button.  Once you confirm your bid, it takes effect immediately.  This is a contractually binding bid.  The current top bid will appear online prior to the auction (but not the maximum).


Register to bid through our Web Catalogue (you will receive a confirmation email).  Approximately one half hour prior to the auction a “Bid Live” button will appear. 

As long as you are registered and logged in you will be able to listen live to the auctioneer and bid in real-time through your computer.  If you choose this option please register early as we WILL NOT be able to offer assistance during the auction.


If you are the successful bidder, you may collect your purchases in person, or have Hall's Auction Services Ld. assist you with shipping arrangements.  The price you pay will be the amount of the final bid (the hammer price) plus a buyer's premium.  Of course, no transaction would be complete without adding the GST!
